Types of PresentationPoster PresentationsPoster presentations are where students display information about their project on poster boards. It should briefly define the problem, question, or specific topic addressed by the research or scholarship, or the purpose of the creative project; it should indicate the methods and/or approach taken in the inquiry; and it should summarize your results or conclusions. During the poster sessions, students will be assigned a specific location and where they will find an easel on which to place their posters. Forty to fifty posters will be displayed during one 45 to 60 minute poster session. Presenters stand by their easel, available to discuss their research, scholarly or creative projects with the audiences who approach the poster. Posters must be readable from at least three feet away and the boards must be 3' or 4' (height) by 4' (width). See Presentation Guidelines for more specific information and work with your faculty mentor when preparing your poster material and placement to ensure that your presentation is appropriate to the discipline. Oral PresentationsOral presentations and performances are 15 minutes in length with three to five additional minutes allotted for a question-and-answer period. They are presented as part of a session consisting of four to five presentations, usually addressing common subject matter. A faculty member will moderate the session, by introducing the presenter, facilitating the question and answer session and keeping time. The sessions are kept on a strict schedule. In the sciences and some social sciences, presentations are usually made from notes and are accompanied by visual materials such as tables, graphs, charts, and photographs (most often in PowerPoint, but sometimes as 35 mm. slides or overhead transparencies). In the humanities and some other social sciences, presentations are usually read aloud from a prepared text, sometimes with accompanying visual materials. Performances or visual art presentations may take a different format, although will be 15 minutes long, followed by the question and answer session. See Presentation Guidelines for more specific information and work with your faculty mentor to produce an oral presentation appropriate to your discipline . Performing and Visual Arts PresentationsThere are a variety of ways to present works in the performing or visual arts. Many kinds of performances and visual arts fit easily into the format of 15-minute oral presentation; some may be exhibits or displays of drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, sculpture; some may be readings of creative writing, poetry, scripts; and some may be video and film viewings. See Presentation Guidelines for more specific information and work with your faculty mentor to develop a presentation that is appropriate to your discipline.
